The word COALESCE unites the prefix co- (“together”) and the Latin word alescere, meaning “to grow”. The 5 artists in this exhibition represent the First Inclusion Fellowships awarded by Chicago Sculpture International for their artistic merit and experience in sculpture as medium. Together they present new works honing emotions into symbolism that grapples with overcoming boundaries. These works share how each artist perceives the world around them through their hand. Through physical molding, hammering, weaving, silently looking, rhythmically beating, scraping, rolling, and collecting. Some artists openly collaborated with each other and will speak about their work at Artist Talks and gallery activations. Others will be on residencies and working further in the studio locally. These works will be presented in differing stages of development with accompanying notes and sketches, videos, and correspondence to show the viewer how ideas coalesce to become art and more specifically interpreted in three dimensions informing a new use of the gallery format.
